Why Australia is the next big stage for global productions.

Australia has a long history of attracting global productions. It looks spectacular on screen, and it also delivers where it matters most with quality, capability and commercial outcomes.

For international producers, studios and financiers weighing where to base their next feature, series or post-production project, Australia stands out as a strategic screen destination. World class crews, sophisticated facilities and a mature incentive framework come together to create an environment where creativity and commercial logic align. At Acclime, our Film and Entertainment specialists work with international productions to help navigate Australia’s screen incentives, structure projects effectively and turn policy into real financial outcomes.

Australia’s screen incentives, designed for scale

Australia’s national incentive framework supports screen production across the full lifecycle, from principal photography through to post, digital and visual effects. These incentives are designed to attract international investment while strengthening local industry capability.

The producer tax offset

Australia offers a refundable tax offset for qualifying Australian productions. This includes:

  • A 40% tax rebate on qualifying Australian production expenditure (QAPE) for theatrical feature films
  • A 30% tax rebate on QAPE for television, series, non-theatrical formats and documentaries

The producer offset is designed to support long form content and sustained production activity, making Australia an attractive base for creative and commercial investment.

The location tax offset

For international productions that undertake principal photography in Australia with QAPE of AUD 20 million (and use one or more Australian providers to deliver post, digital and visual effects), the location offset provides a 30% tax rebate on QAPE.

This incentive has positioned Australia as one of the most competitive global destinations for large scale film and television productions, particularly those seeking experienced crews, reliable infrastructure and predictable delivery.

The post, digital and visual effects tax offset

Australia also offers a 30% tax rebate for post, digital and visual effects (PDV) work undertaken in Australia. Importantly, this offset applies regardless of where principal photography occurs. If the PDV work is carried out in Australia, the incentive applies.

This has made Australia a global hub for visual effects, animation and post-production pipelines, supporting international projects that require scale, technical expertise and creative excellence.

A complete production ecosystem

Australia’s incentives are underpinned by a deep and resilient screen industry. International productions benefit from:

  • Highly skilled and experienced crews
  • Advanced studio facilities and post-production infrastructure
  • A proven track record delivering complex, high value productions
  • Strong collaboration between industry and government

In addition, state and territory-based incentives may be available to complement federal offsets, further strengthening the overall production proposition for eligible projects.

How Acclime supports productions in Australia

Understanding incentives is one thing. Accessing them efficiently and compliantly is another. Acclime works alongside international producers, studios and finance teams to support projects at every stage, including:

  • Structuring production entities and operations in Australia
  • Assessing eligibility across federal and state incentive programs
  • Managing certification and documentation requirements
  • Supporting production accounting, tax and compliance
  • Coordinating cross border advisory for projects spanning multiple jurisdictions

Global production decisions are increasingly shaped by financial discipline. Budgets are scrutinised, timelines are compressed and certainty matters more than ever.

Australia’s screen incentives offer a compelling combination of scale, stability and creative capability. With the right advisory support, productions can move forward with confidence and clarity.

If you are considering Australia for your next film, series or post-production project, Acclime’s Film & Entertainment specialists are ready to help you understand the incentives, structure your project and navigate the process with confidence.
